“Black River” Finalist at 2023 Big Sky Documentary Film Festival

Black River, directed by Max Retik, premiered at the 2023 Big Sky Documentary Film Festival and was named a finalist in the Best Short competition. The festival, held in Missoula, Montana, from February 17–26, is one of the largest documentary film festivals in the United States. Known for its commitment to supporting non-fiction storytelling, Big Sky showcases films that inspire dialogue, build community, and expand perspectives on critical social and environmental issues.

The 20th annual Big Sky Documentary Film Festival featured nearly 150 nonfiction films, including 51 features and 83 short documentaries, with 41 world premieres, 14 North American premieres, and 8 U.S. premieres. Over 90% of the program was selected from an open call, which drew nearly 2,000 submissions from 81 nations.

Described as “a poignant exploration of environmental and social challenges faced by river communities”, Black River highlights the intricate relationship between the natural world of Appalachia and the people who depend on it. With its thoughtful approach, the film brings attention to the human cost of environmental degradation, offering viewers a nuanced look at the struggle for balance between tradition, survival, and change.

As part of the festival, Max Retik was also invited to give a series of guest lectures at local high schools, sharing insights about the art and impact of documentary filmmaking. These sessions aimed to inspire and educate the next generation of filmmakers, emphasizing the power of storytelling to drive understanding and change.

The recognition of Black River as a finalist in the Best Short competition highlights its compelling approach and connection with audiences. Max Retik is a filmmaker whose work focuses on capturing human stories and thoughtful perspectives.
